PETERBOROUGH CITY COUNCIL SELECTS ENTUITY’S EYE OF THE STORM FOR EDUCATIONAL AND CORPORATE NETWORK MANAGEMENT
Network Management Suite Readies Infrastructure for Strategic Community Goals
NEW YORK, NY and LONDON, UK – January 22, 2007 - Peterborough City Council (PCC) has selected Entuity™, Inc.’s Eye of the Storm® (EYE) network management suite to ensure its technology infrastructure is capable of achieving the goals outlined in Peterborough’s Community Strategy. EYE was chosen over several other management applications and frameworks by PCC’s Information Communication Technology (ICT) department for its ability to quickly deploy, operational ‘real-time’ analytics, and in-depth network service management reporting.
One of the primary goals of the Peterborough Community Strategy is to build an educational system fit for the 21st century, including increasing the provision of high-quality, accessible higher education. Using EYE, PCC’s ICT can now proactively monitor and optimize its network infrastructure assets, including 65 primary and 15 secondary schools and nine libraries, for the educational and business applications delivering services such as high-speed Internet access, video conferencing, secure data transfer, and VoIP. These capabilities provide the foundation for innovative educational approaches such as its Virtual Learning Environment where students can electronically attend classes at campuses across the city.
During PCC ICT’s evaluation of EYE, the product identified several previously unknown areas of concern within the network allowing network operations personnel to proactively take corrective action. In one example, EYE was able to identify and isolate transmit errors between the one of the main libraries and the Town Hall. The network support team was able to correct the cause of this issue and the resultant latency in the network.
“Our goal is to identify and fix network related issues before our users even know there is a problem,” said Ataf Mahmood, Senior Communications Analyst for PCC ICT. “Believe me, I would rather not get the phone call. EYE lets us set our own threshold levels for various device attributes and actively alerts us if they are exceeded. In conjunction with the fault and root cause capabilities, we can minimize network latency, ensure proper bandwidth utilization, and preempt brownouts to keep our phones from ringing – and that means happy customers.”
Eye has enhanced productivity and efficiency by providing detailed network information. Since deploying EYE, the network management suite has helped PCC’s IT operations personnel manage key processes more efficiently with fewer resources, resulting in reliable service delivery, increased productivity, and greater cost efficiencies across the network.
EYE’s sophisticated reporting capabilities allow personnel to access the historical data stored within EYE to generate highly-specialized, Internet-ready reports for convenient end user access. Additionally, EYE’s auto-discovery functionality will be used to baseline infrastructure asset inventory to simplify capacity planning and hardware maintenance expense.
“Several strategic growth plans for the city through 2011 require state-of-the-art network connectivity,” said Paul Barnes, Networks & Schools Technical Manager for PCC. “EYE gives us the ability to proactively provision our network to efficiently deliver not only today’s IT services, but future capabilities as well. This allows us to manage the resources for Council corporate needs and for the growing educational needs of the community.”
